ABOUT SASTEL
For 27 years, SASTEL Pharmaceuticals has specialized in contract manufacturing with small-batch processing, supporting entrepreneurs entering the vibrant health and wellness market. In 2024, the company commenced operations in a newly designed manufacturing facility—marking a strategic advancement toward bespoke GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) capabilities.
SASTEL Pharmaceuticals was founded in 1998 by Johann and Lienta Roelofse, who recognized the demand for quality, short-run manufacturing within the herbal and health supplement sector. The company is registered with the National Department of Health, the South African Health Product Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA), and the South African Pharmacy Council. Since 2001, SASTEL has also held memberships with the South African Quality Institute and the Health Products Association. In addition, the company has earned HACCP certification through the BSI Group.
EXPANDING INTO PERSONAL CARE
Due to the slow progress in regulations pertaining to complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs) and with the constant changing of goal posts for compliance by the South African Health Products Authority (SAHPRA), SASTEL Packaging was established. GMP, HACCP and food safety principles became the heartbeat of the company and lead to the business achieving FSSC22000 certification through SGS in 2018. SASTEL Personal Care was added to address dedicated opportunities in the marketplace for cosmetics. In all areas, the safety and quality of finished products are a priority.
NEW PREMISES FOR THE GROWING BUSINESS
In 2024, SASTEL partially relocated to its new, custom-built facility in Wintersnest, Pretoria North. This site is being developed according to plans that include ISO 8-rated cleanrooms, HVAC systems, and compliance with PIC/S guidelines. Design and planning are being executed by architects, GMP consultants, and teams of electrical, structural, and civil engineers.

Operating as a family business, SASTEL Pharmaceuticals—comprising SASTEL Packaging and SASTEL Personal Care—leverages its strong competencies in short-run manufacturing and robust R&D capabilities. This allows small and emerging enterprises to successfully introduce herbal and health supplement products through modest production batches. Numerous clients that began their journey with SASTEL have since evolved into reputable, established brands.
The company’s manufacturing portfolio encompasses capsules, powders, sachets, liquids, and personal-care products. A selection of these items is exported to neighboring countries, Europe, and the United States. Additionally, as a cost-effective measure, SASTEL repackages imported products for distribution within South Africa.
